روش مناسب این است که به پشت دراز بکشید و اپلیکاتور پر شده را تا آن جا که ممکن است در عمق واژن (7.5 تا 10 سانتی متر) فرو برید. بعد اپلیکاتور را در حدود 1.5 سانتی متر جلو کشیده و با فشار دادن بر انتهای اپلیکاتور ژل یا کرم را خالی کنید و سپس اپلیکاتور را در آورید. به اندازه یک اپلیکاتور ژل و یا کرم فقط برای یک بار مقاربت کافی است، بنابراین وقتی مقاربت تکرار می شود باید قبل از مقاربت مجدد بار دیگر ژل یا کرم را مصرف کنید.
اپلیکاتور پلاستیکی را پس از استفاده باید با آب و صابون بشویید تا ژل یا کرم در آن باقی نماند و سبب سفت شدن حرکت میله آن نشود. اگر چنین حالتی پیش آمد باید اپلیکاتور را در آب ولرم فرو برید، اما هرگز آن را نجوشانید زیرا ماده پلاستیکی آن در برابر حرارت های بالا مقاومت نمی کند.در صورتی که فقط ژل یا کرم مصرف می کنید حداقل تا شش ساعت پس از آخرین مقاربت مهبل خود را شستشو ندهید. قسمت بیشتر ژل یا کرم صبح روز بعد هنگام برخاستن، از مهبل بیرون آمده و با شستن معمولی کاملا پاک می شود.
