It’s turned up on pharmacy shelves only within the last few decades, but red yeast rice has been prized for its powerful medicinal properties for hundreds of years.

As one of the top natural remedies for high cholesterol levels, red yeast rice is one of the few natural supplements that contain active ingredients virtually identical to those found in prescription medications.

Plus, the benefits of red yeast rice extend beyond correcting cholesterol levels, with emerging research showing that it may also benefit inflammation, metabolic syndrome, blood sugar levels and more.

Here are the benefits, side effects and dosage recommendations for red yeast rice.

Red yeast rice is a type of fermented rice that is produced using a specific species of mold.قرص daily yeast

It’s been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries for its powerful health-promoting properties.

Red yeast rice contains the compound monacolin K — the same active ingredient found in prescription cholesterol-lowering medications like lovastatin (1).

For this reason, it’s often used as a cost-effective alternative to pricey medications to help reduce cholesterol levels and support heart health.

Research has shown other beneficial effects as well, ranging from reduced cancer cell growth to improved blood sugar and insulin levels.

Today, red yeast rice is commonly sold as an over-the-counter supplement marketed to help manage cholesterol and improve overall health.

Heart disease is a serious condition that affects millions and is estimated to account for 31.5% of deaths around the world (2).

High cholesterol — one of the main risk factors for heart disease — can cause arteries to narrow and stiffen, leading to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke (3).

Red yeast rice is commonly used as a natural remedy to help lower cholesterol levels and promote heart health, often with less adverse side effects than prescription drugs used to treat high cholesterol (4).

One study in 25 people showed that red yeast rice lowered total cholesterol by an average of 15% and “bad” LDL cholesterol by 21% over about two months of treatment (5).

Similarly, an eight-week study in 79 people reported that taking 600 mg of red yeast rice twice daily significantly reduced “bad” LDL cholesterol levels, compared to a control group (6).

What’s more, one review of 21 studies found that red yeast rice was effective at reducing levels of total and “bad” LDL cholesterol, as well as triglycerides and blood pressure, when combined with statin drugs (7).

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that increase your risk of chronic conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

Some of the criteria for metabolic syndrome include high blood pressure, excess body fat, increased blood sugar and alterations in cholesterol or triglyceride levels (8).

Several studies have found that red yeast rice may help treat some of these risk factors and could be used as a natural treatment to aid in its prevention (9).

One of its most well-documented effects is its ability to lower cholesterol. Research shows that it can effectively reduce both total and LDL cholesterol levels (5, 6).

Another small, 18-week study found that a supplement containing red yeast rice was able to reduce blood sugar, insulin levels and systolic blood pressure (the top number of a reading) in people with metabolic syndrome (10).

Plus, an eight-week study looked at the effects of red yeast rice on mice fed a high-fat diet compared to a control group. It found that red yeast rice was able to prevent increases in cholesterol levels and body weight (11).

Inflammation is a normal immune response designed to protect your body against acute infections and foreign invaders.

However, sustained inflammation is thought to contribute to chronic conditions like diabetes, cancer and heart disease (12).

Studies show that supplementing with red yeast rice may help reduce inflammation and promote better health in the long term.

For example, a study in 50 people with metabolic syndrome showed that taking a supplement containing red yeast rice and olive extract reduced levels of oxidative stress — a key cause of chronic inflammation — by up to 20% (13).

Similarly, one study found that giving red yeast extract to rats with kidney damage reduced levels of specific proteins involved in inflammation in the body (14).

Although current research is limited to animal and test-tube studies, some evidence suggests that red yeast rice may help reduce the growth and spread of cancer cells.

One study found that giving mice with prostate cancer red yeast rice powder significantly decreased tumor volume compared to a control group (15).

Similarly, a test-tube study showed that treating prostate cancer cells with red yeast rice was able to decrease cancer cell growth to a greater degree than lovastatin, a cholesterol-lowering medication with anticancer effects (16).

However, more research is needed to evaluate the effects of red yeast rice on other types of cancer in humans.

Specifically, further studies should be done to determine how the potential anticancer effects of red yeast rice may affect the general population.

Monacolin K is the active compound found in red yeast rice that is commonly extracted and used in cholesterol-lowering statins and medications.

It’s typically credited with the majority of the health benefits attributed to red yeast rice, especially regarding its cholesterol-lowering properties.

According to the FDA, red yeast rice products that contain monacolin K should be considered a drug, subjecting them to stricter regulations than standard over-the-counter supplements (17).

Since 1998, the FDA has taken action against several companies selling red yeast rice extract, noting that it’s illegal to market these products as supplements in the US.

In recent years, a number of red yeast rice supplements have popped up, many of which evade FDA regulations by containing only trace amounts of monacolin K.

However, it remains unclear how effective these products really are and whether they have the same benefits on health as true red yeast rice (17).

Despite the long list of benefits associated with red yeast rice, supplementing with it may come with some adverse effects.

Gastrointestinal problems like bloating, gas and stomach pain are some of the most commonly reported side effects of red yeast rice.قرص daily yeast

In more extreme cases, it can also cause issues like muscle problems, liver toxicity and allergic reactions, similar to the side effects caused by prescription cholesterol-lowering medications (1).

For this reason, it’s important to stick to the recommended dosage and buy from a reputable retailer to ensure you’re getting the best quality possible.

Because research is still limited on the long-term safety of red yeast rice, it’s also not recommended for those currently taking statins or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you notice any adverse symptoms after taking red yeast rice, consider decreasing your dosage or discontinuing use and consult a trusted healthcare practitioner.

Red yeast rice is available in capsule or tablet form and often formulated in combination with other ingredients, such as CoQ10, nattokinase or omega-3 fatty acids.

Doses ranging from 200–4,800 mg have been studied in clinical trials, typically containing about 10 mg of total monacolin (18).

Most major supplement brands on the market generally recommend taking between 1,200–2,400 mg daily, divided into two to three doses.

However, given the risk of adverse side effects and safety concerns associated with red yeast rice extract, it’s best to speak with your doctor to determine the best dosage for you.

Red yeast rice may support heart health and reduce cholesterol levels, inflammation, cancer cell growth and risk factors of metabolic syndrome.

It can cause gastrointestinal issues, allergic reactions, liver toxicity and muscle problems and is not recommended for people taking statins or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Most supplements recommend 1,200–2,400 mg daily. However, many products on the market today contain minimal amounts of its active ingredient, potentially negating any health benefits associated with red rice extract.

Brewer’s yeast is traditionally used as a source of vitamin B, selenium, and chromium, especially by vegetarians. Clinical trials have evaluated yeast for a role in immunomodulation, respiratory infections, prevention of postsurgical infections (as beta-glucan), and as a source of dietary fiber to improve the lipid profile. However, quality trials are lacking.

Upper respiratory tract infections: S. cerevisiae 500 mg daily has been used in clinical trials over 12 weeks to treat respiratory infections and allergic rhinitis. Laxative: 6 to 50 g of fresh brewer’s yeast over 3 days was used in a study for the treatment of cancer-related constipation. Acute diarrhea: 500 mg daily of brewer’s yeast is recommended in the German Commission E Monographs.

Information regarding safety and efficacy in pregnancy and lactation is lacking.

Many different strains of the yeast exist, and preparations may be produced from different sources. As a health supplement, the deactivated yeast is utilized and is available in powder, flake, tablet, and liquid forms. S. cerevisiae serves as an abundant source of the B-complex vitamins, minerals, and proteins, while being notably low in fat and sodium. B vitamins include thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), folic acid (B9), and biotin (B7). However, brewer’s yeast does not contain cyanocobalamin (B12) and would need to be obtained from other sources. Minerals provided by brewer’s yeast include selenium, chromium (one of the richest natural sources of chromium), and zinc. Limited trials have been conducted on S. cerevisiae as a single ingredient preparation by a small pool of researchers. Studies have also focused on selenium- and chromium-enriched yeast preparations used in diabetes and cancer patients (see Selenium or Chromium monographs).Moyad 2007

Research reveals no animal data in the last 10 years regarding the use of the yeast S. cerevisiae in diarrhea. The low toxicity profile of brewer’s yeast and widespread use as a food supplement make such data irrelevant.

An open-label trial evaluated the effect of 6 to 50 g daily of fresh baker’s yeast in cancer-related constipation. The authors suggest yeast fermentation in the intestine may induce water retention in the lumen similar to that of lactulose or sorbitol.Wenk 2007 The symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea is an indication for brewer’s yeast listed in the German Commission E Monographs.Blumenthal 1998

S. cerevisiae–derived beta-glucan has been shown to enhance neutrophil antimicrobial functions in vitro and in animal studies and to reduce staphylococcal abscess formation in a guinea pig model.Bell 1999, Lehne 2006

Clinical trials using yeast-derived beta-glucan are limited. Reviews of the effects of beta-glucan on the immune system have been published for fungal, oat, and barley beta-glucan sources.

Enhanced microbial killing by monocytes and neutrophils has been demonstrated in healthy volunteers after S. cerevisiae–derived beta-glucan (Betafectin ) administration and in surgical patients.Babineau 1994, Dellinger 1999 Postexercise immunosuppression was minimized with baker’s yeast beta-glucan in a randomized, crossover trial (n = 60). Monocyte concentrations (total and pro-inflammatory) and plasma cytokine concentrations were increased compared with baseline after strenuous exercise in healthy college students who were given 250 g/day baker’s yeast beta-glucan supplementation for 10 days prior to strenuous aerobic exercise. Additionally, lipopolysaccharide-stimulated cytokine production increased before exercise, changes that preceded changes in plasma cytokines.Carpenter 2013

Research reveals no animal data in the last 10 years regarding the use of the yeast S. cerevisiae in metabolic syndrome, hypertension, or diabetes mellitus.

A clinical trial evaluated the effect of brewer’s yeast 10 g/day over 12 weeks on the lipid and glucose profile of healthy adults. No difference was found for body weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol. A decrease in serum triglycerides was demonstrated, as well as improvements in the glucose tolerance test.Li 1994 Similarly, total cholesterol was decreased in a study among 15 obese hypercholesterolemic men.Bell 1999

Two small studies used chromium-enriched brewer’s yeast in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. A double-blind, crossover study (n = 20) compared 8-week treatments with 5 tablets daily of BioChromDIA (brewer’s yeast with chromium 100 mcg per tablet) and identical placebo (brewer’s yeast with chromium 1 mcg per tablet). The dose of brewer’s yeast in this study was not stated. There were no significant differences between treatments for body mass index, lipid profiles, or hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c).Król 2011 A single-blind, placebo-controlled, 3-month study (n = 40) compared brewer’s yeast 9 g plus chromium 42 mcg to control (plain brewer’s yeast without chromium). Mean reductions in HbA1c, serum triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) were significantly greater in the treatment group compared with control.(22) An open-label, 8-week study (n = 55) evaluated the effect of brewer’s yeast 3,600 mg plus chromium 14.4 mcg per day in type 2 diabetes mellitus. A statistically significant reduction in fasting blood glucose was seen at week 8, but not week 4. Statistically significant results were seen at week 4 and week 8 for reductions in triglycerides and LDL-C, and increases in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.Khosravi-Boroujeni 2012

An antiviral effect of S. cerevisiae–derived beta-glucan on swine influenza virus has been demonstrated.Jung 2004

A series of double-blind, randomized clinical trials evaluated the effect of S. cerevisiae 500 mg per day over 12 weeks on symptoms of colds in healthy adults. Among immunized participants, a decrease in the incidence and duration of symptoms was demonstrated, while in nonimmunized participants, a decrease in incidence was observed, with no effect demonstrated on duration and severity of symptoms.Moyad 2008, Moyad 2010 The same researchers evaluated the effect of the same commercial product in allergic rhinitis and demonstrated a decrease in nasal congestion and rhinnorhea and an increase in salivary IgA during high pollen-count days. No effect on ocular discharges was demonstrated.Moyad 2009

Improved depression scores have been demonstrated after 2 weeks among healthy volunteers using 200 and 500 mg doses of yeast hydrolysate as a gum. Brain mapping after 3 days showed a profile of a stable psychological state.Lee 2009 In animals, brewer’s yeast extract decreased the spleen weight and interferon and interleukin activity in mice with induced chronic fatigue syndrome.Takahashi 2006

Brewer’s yeast is a type of yeast created as a byproduct of beer brewing. It is typically used in alternative medicine to promote digestive health and is believed to treat a number of health conditions, including colds, flu, diarrhea, and diabetes.

Brewer’s yeast is the dried, deactivated cells of a fungus known as Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It is a rich source of B-complex vitamins, protein, and minerals, including a biologically active form of chromium known as glucose tolerance factor (GTF). This makes brewer’s yeast a potentially useful “natural” nutritional supplement.

Brewer’s yeast used should not be confused with beer yeast used for making beer or active dry yeast used for baking. Unlike these types of active yeast, the cells in brewer’s yeast are non-living and cannot be reactivated.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae should also not be confused with Saccharomyces boulardii, a type of yeast commonly used as a probiotic.

The evidence supporting the health benefits of brewer’s yeast is generally lacking. Nevertheless, alternative practitioners believe that the nutrients in brewer’s yeast can aid in the treatment of digestive problems (such as diarrhea and colitis), respiratory conditions (including colds, influenza, and hay fever), and chronic disorders such as diabetes and high cholesterol.قرص daily yeast

Here is just some of what the current research says:

Despite its use as an anti-diarrheal remedy, there is not much proof that brewer’s yeast can actually help. The one exception may be its use in treating diarrhea caused by the bacterium Clostridium difficile (also known as C. difficile). Most of the evidence supporting this claim dates back to research conducted the 1990s and early 2000s.

One study from the University of Pittsburgh found that brewer’s yeast was able to relieve C. difficile-associated diarrhea in rats by reducing the secretion of water and electrolytes from the colon by around 50 percent.

Results from similar studies have been mixed. The use of brewer’s yeast in treating other types of diarrhea, including antibiotic-associated diarrhea, has not proven effective.

Brewer’s yeast may be useful in treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a digestive disorder characterized by abdominal pain, gas, diarrhea, and constipation.

According to a 2017 review of studies in the World Journal of Gastroenterology, people with IBS provided brewer’s yeast were 51 percent more likely to experience at least a 50 percent reduction in IBS symptoms compared to placebo.

The conclusions were limited by the small size of the reviewed studies. In the end, only two trials met the criteria for inclusion for a total of 579 participants.

Brewer’s yeast is believed by some to treat the common cold, flu, and other upper respiratory tract infections.

While the exact mechanism of action remains unexplained, proponents claim that brewer yeast increases the immune response in a way that helps the body “treat itself.” There is some evidence of this, albeit weak.

A 2012 study from Utah reported that women provided a daily brewer’s yeast supplement called Wellmune had 60 percent fewer upper respiratory tract infections after 12 weeks than women provided a placebo.

Despite the promising results, brewer’s yeast did nothing to reduce the severity or duration of illness in people who did get sick. This suggests that S. cerevisiae has little, if any, antiviral action and is unable to directly treat an infection.

Glucose tolerance factor (GTC) found in brewer’s yeast is known to enhance the insulin response. It does so by binding to insulin and increasing its absorption in blood vessels by nearly three-fold. This action can be especially beneficial to people with insulin resistance.

A 2013 study in the Journal of Preventive Medicine reported that adults with type 2 diabetes given 1,800 milligrams of brewer’s yeast per day experienced a 9 percent drop in their fasting blood glucose after 12 weeks.

By contrast, participants given a placebo had a 7 percent increase in their blood glucose levels.

A 2013 study from Iran further demonstrated that the same dose of brewer’s yeast (1,800 milligrams per day) improved blood pressure in people with type 2 diabetes, reducing the systolic (upper) pressure by an average of 4.1 mmHg and the diastolic (lower) pressure by 5.7 mmHg.

Despite these findings, brewer’s yeast has little to no effect on HbA1C levels and is not considered an effective treatment for diabetes. With that being said, it may be worth exploring if you have prediabetes and want to take steps to avoid progressing to type 2 diabetes.

Brewer’s yeast is generally considered safe for short-term use. In some people, brewer’s yeast may cause headache, stomach upset, and gas. Brewer’s yeast should not be used for longer than 12 weeks and may need to be avoided in certain groups. Among the considerations:

While brewer’s yeast may pose a hypothetical risk to women with recurrent yeast infections, the risk is considered low. With that being said, you may want to avoid brewer’s yeat if you have an active yeast infection.

Due to the lack of safety research, brewer’s yeast should not be used in children, pregnant women, and nursing mothers.

Brewer’s yeast may interact with certain medications. Chief among these are monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) used to treat depression. These include:

MAOIs work by preventing the body from breaking down tyramine, a substance found in large amounts in brewer’s yeast. If taken together, MAOIs can prevent the body from breaking down the excess tyramine as it normally would. The excessive build-up can lead to a dangerous rise in blood pressure, known as a hypertensive crisis.

A hypertensive crisis may also occur if you take brewer’s yeast with the narcotic Demerol (meperidine) used to treat moderate to severe pain.

Brewer’s yeast may also potentially interact with antifungal drugs such as Diflucan (fluconazole) Lamisil (terbinafine), and Sporanox (itraconazole) use to treat fungal infections.

Brewer’s yeast is available in tablet and powder forms. There are no set guidelines on how to use brewer’s yeast safely or effectively.

Brewer’s yeast tablets generally come in doses ranging from 250 milligrams (mg) to 1,000 milligrams. A daily dosage within this range (or up to 2,000 milligrams per day) is considered safe if taken for no longer than 12 weeks.

Brewer’s yeast powder is usually mixed with water or other beverages. Most manufacturers recommend one to two tablespoons per day as a nutritional supplement. Because brewer’s yeast has a bitter flavor that some people find off-putting, it often helps to mix it into a smoothie or juice.

As a rule of thumb, start with smaller doses of brewer’s yeast and gradually increase over several days or weeks as tolerated. Never exceed the recommended dosage on the product label.

Not all brewer’s yeast products are created equal. This is especially true of powdered brewer’s yeast which can vary from one brand to the next. While powders can are cheaper than tablets, be sure to comparison shop to find the brands with the highest nutrient content.

Try to choose 100% brewer’s yeast products without any fillers, additives, sweeteners, or sugar. Check to see if it lists the complete nutritional information, including the daily value (DV) of vitamins, minerals, protein, fiber, and fat. (Many don’t.)

Brewer’s yeast is readily found online and can be purchased at many health food stores, drugstores, and shops specializing in nutritional supplements.

Is brewer’s yeast the same thing as nutritional yeast?

Brewer’s yeast is derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae as the byproduct of beer-making. The yeast cells are harvested, pasteurized, and deactivated as part of the manufacturing process.

Nutritional yeast is also Saccharomyces cerevisiae but is not a byproduct of brewing. Rather, it is specifically grown on a medium such as corn, rice, or other types of grain.

Although they are essentially the same thing, brewer’s yeast has a bitter flavor while nutritional yeast has a somewhat nutty and cheesy taste (as well a flakier texture). Because of this, vegetarians and vegans will often sprinkle it onto pasta like parmesan cheese or swirl it into a cream or cheese sauce.

How can you tell beer yeast from brewer’s yeast?

While brewer’s yeast is readily available in drugstores and health food stores, beer yeast is found almost exclusively in wholesale or retail businesses servicing the beer brewing industry.

With that being said, beer yeast is often labeled a “brewing yeast.” Unlike brewer’s yeast, it is still active and can be bloomed (grown) to give beer its yeasty taste and fizzy carbonation. The same applies to the term “baker’s yeast,” which some people use to describe brewer’s yeast and others apply to active dry yeasts used to leaven bread.

Because of the potential for confusion, store your brewer’s yeast with your daily vitamins and medicine rather than in the pantry or spice cabinet.

If consumed, beer yeast or active dry yeast can cause extreme gastrointestinal distress as the yeast cells start to multiply, bloom, and produce carbon dioxide. If you accidentally eat either of these, call your doctor immediately.
